Family Meals: Sharing Histories, Sharing Futures

Inspired by the generative learning that occurs during meals in domestic, familial, and community settings, Kameelah Janan Rasheed invites artists, organizers, community members, and educators to two potluck dinners that will draw upon histories and futures of independent Black schools.
This event is free and space is limited. To participate please email season@newmuseum.org with a paragraph expressing your interest in and commitment to attending both dinners. Family meals will be hosted on June 13 and September 12 at 7 p.m. We ask all guests to bring a contribution to the potluck.
Sharing Histories
Wednesday June 13, 7 PM
Kameelah Janan Rasheed will introduce this meal with excerpts from the documentary Dreams of a City: Creating East Palo Alto (Michael Levin, 1997). She will focus on the history of Nairobi College, a community-created college and day school founded in her hometown.
Sharing Futures
Wednesday September 12, 7 PM
Conversation at this meal will focus on responding to questions that have arisen over the course of the residency.
Family Meals are organized in conjunction with the New Museum’s summer art and social justice residency and exhibition “The Black School x Kameelah Janan Rasheed,” which explores the past and futures of black critical pedagogies.

Kameelah Janan Rasheed (b.1985, East Palo Alto, CA) is a visual artist and writer based in New York. She explores language and narration through an interdisciplinary practice that includes installation, poetry, publications, performance-lectures, and learning environments. Rasheed is a former high school history teacher now working as a curriculum writer, teaching artist, and professor focused on research-based art practices.
