The Friends of the Triennial provide critical support for the 2021 New Museum Triennial. The group benefits from a program of exclusive events developed by the exhibition’s co-curators, Curator Margot Norton at the New Museum, and Jamillah James, Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. In recognition of their support, Friends of the Triennial also receive a Limited Edition by a Triennial artist, created especially for supporters of the exhibition. The Producers Council is an invitation-only membership group of contemporary art patrons, collectors, and arts professionals who seek a deeper connection to the New Museum’s program and exhibitions. Producers Council members benefit from a robust program designed exclusively for them by our renowned team of top curators, including the opportunity to participate in our acclaimed Art Study Tours. The Council provides critical support for New Museum Lobby Gallery exhibitions, a space serving as a dedicated platform for gifted early career artists.

Recent Art Study Tours attended by Producers Council members have included a trip to the Venice Biennale, dOCUMENTA, and the Münster Sculpture Project, as well as visits to Colombia, Scandinavia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. Exhibitions supported by the Producers Council include “Elaine Cameron-Weir: viscera has questions about itself” and “Jonathas de Andrade: O Peixe,” both 2017, two notable exhibitions that reinforced our commitment to representing artists of all generations, genders, and geographies.

The Research And Residencies (R&R) Council provides essential support for the New Museum’s Department of Education and Public Engagement, which delivers innovative public programming for our diverse audiences of all ages, often with artist participation, to encourage greater access to contemporary culture.

The New Museum’s Education and Public Engagement Department serves over 18,000 adults, teens, and families annually. Activities and events include:

PUBLIC PROGRAMS

the chance to dig deeper into the shows on view through discussions between artists, curators, critics, and other leading thinkers. Our signature Outside the Box lectures and a robust schedule of docent-led tours offer intimate views of our exhibitions and insights about the artists who created them. Performance programs include some of the most exciting dance, music, and theatrical pieces being made today, highlighting emerging and risk-taking live art and often featuring commissioned work by current artists in residence.

SCHOOL, YOUTH, AND FAMILY PROGRAMS

Offering immersive experiences for youth and families, the New Museum provides access to the rich context of contemporary art. The First Saturdays for Families program engages children four to ten years old in conversations and activities. A variety of other programs—including the Experimental Study Program, Teen Nights, and the Museum’s Summer Teen Apprentice Program—provide learners aged fifteen to twenty the opportunity to participate in collaborative work with artists in residence, critical discussions about culture, and hands-on experience with various aspects of museum work. Collaboration with partner schools and the Professional Development for Teachers program has facilitated relationships with community educators.

SCHOLARSHIP

The Museum’s research and scholarship initiatives have resulted in several signature programs, including Fifth Floor exhibitions, archival Resource Center presentations, and newly commissioned performances in the New Museum Theater. Public and private roundtables, colloquia, and think tanks have led to or are the results of inquiries pursued throughout the Research and Development Seasons, with artists in residence conducting sessions with teens in the Museum’s Experimental Study Program. In 2014, the New Museum and the MIT Press relaunched the influential Critical Anthologies in Art and Culture series, with a new thematic volume released each year since.

The Artemis Council is a dedicated group of patrons who directly support exhibitions, new commissions, and residencies by women artists at the New Museum. After a successful inaugural year, the group is deeply committed to championing gender equality in the arts that is central to the New Museum’s DNA.

Artemis provided critical support for the New Museum’s most successful exhibition to date, “Pipilotti Rist: Pixel Forest,” as well as its Phaidon-published publication. The generosity of the group also helped fund exhibitions and publications by nine extraordinary woman artists of diverse ages, geographies, backgrounds, and orientations: Elaine Cameron-Weir, Carol Rama, Kaari Upson, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye in 2017, and Nicole Eisenman, Goshka Macuga, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz, Cally Spooner, and Andra Ursuta in 2016.

The International Leadership Council is a prestigious, invite-only circle of leading collectors and art patrons from all over the world who receive unparalleled access to the New Museum’s curators, special exhibitions, and programs. They gather twice a year—London in the fall, New York in the spring—to meet and enjoy special programming with Lisa Phillips, Toby Devan Lewis Director, and members of the senior leadership team. This Council is an important expansion of the New Museum’s international network and reinforces our global program of curators, artists, exhibitions, residencies, and institutional partners. Our current member base reaches from New York to Mumbai, Rio de Janeiro to Moscow, Torino to Hong Kong—and beyond.

The Council generously underwrites one exhibition per year. Previous exhibitions funded by the International Leadership Council include “The Keeper” (2016), “Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon” (2017) and our 231 Gallery exhibitions (2018).

The International Leadership Council provides leadership support to New Museum programs and exhibitions while serving as global ambassadors of our mission of New Art, New Ideas. Benefits last for one year, and members are asked to make an annual contribution of $15,000 ($14,600 tax-deductible).

Ways of Making a Planned/Legacy Gift

There are many ways in which to make a Planned/Legacy Gift to the New Museum

Bequests
You can leave a specific dollar amount, specific asset, or percentage of the remainder of your estate to the New Museum. Sample language includes:

I hereby give, devise, and bequeath to the New Museum of Contemporary Art, 235 Bowery, New York, NY the sum of $_______(or asset name) or XX% of my residuary estate.

Charitable Remainder Trusts and Charitable Lead Trusts
Whether you establish a remainder trust or lead trust, you can easily designate the New Museum to receive all or a percentage of the charitable portion.

Charitable Remainder Trust
A charitable remainder trust is established when the donor makes an irrevocable contribution of cash, securities or other property, which is place in trust. Income from the trust is paid to one or more beneficiaries (which can include the donor) for life or a set of numbered years. The New Museum will receive the right to the principal as a remainder interest.

Charitable Lead Trust
A charitable remainder trust is established when a contribution of cash, securities, or other property is placed in trust, and the donor designates the New Museum as the recipient of the income from the trust. The asset or principal goes to the donor or a designated beneficiary at the end of the term of the trust.

Retirement Plan Assets
You can designate the New Museum as the beneficiary of your retirement plan by obtaining a change of beneficiary form from your plan administrator. All or a portion of the plan can be designated for the New Museum.

Life Insurance Policies
You can designate the New Museum as a beneficiary or beneficiary and owner of your life insurance policy. If all premiums are paid, simply obtain a beneficiary designation form and name the New Museum of Contemporary Art, 235 Bowery, New York, NY as a beneficiary. Policies with outstanding premiums can also be utilized. Museum staff can provide information regarding this gift plan.

Securities/Stock
Gifts of appreciated securities that are readily marketable are one of the easiest and most popular ways to give to the New Museum. Transfer instructions can be provided by the New Museum’s Development or Finance staff.

Real Estate/Tangible Property
Making a donation of real estate or other types of tangible property, such as artwork, is another way to give to the New Museum. You can contribute your entire property or a fraction interest of it. You can even contribute your property while continuing to live in it. This type of gift of a future interest in property.
