Rhizome is the leading art organization dedicated to born-digital art and culture. Founded in 1996, affiliated with the New Museum since 2003, and an anchor tenant of NEW INC, the first museum-led incubator, since 2014, Rhizome has played an integral role in the history, definition, and proliferation of art engaged with networked technologies.
Today, Rhizome holds an important and unique position in digital culture. Its forward-thinking program champions new and emerging artistic practices that have yet to find support elsewhere. With its signature Seven on Seven conference, Rhizome facilitates collaboration and dialogue between the fields of art and technology at the highest level.
While looking ahead to the future, Rhizome also enriches the public’s understanding of digital culture’s past through both discursive and technology initiatives. Anchored by the Webrecorder project—a platform for archiving the dynamic web—its digital preservation program functions as a robust in-house start-up, uniquely combining cultural leadership with open source software development. Through these preservation initiatives, Rhizome endeavors to transform the way users and institutions preserve and access digital culture.
