Graphic: Bow Young and YSA Teen Summit, 2023
As part of the Education Department’s Youth Spectrum Arts (YSA), the New Museum will host Beyond the Essence, More Than Critical, a Teen Summit and celebration organized by this year’s YSA members. The summit will include activities organized around the exhibition “Wangechi Mutu: Intertwined.” Beyond the Essence, More Than Critical asks what happens after we observe what occupies the space of the museum. Art isn’t simply there to be beautiful; it has a message that can inspire action. The Teen Summit is an opportunity for participants to dig deeper and discover both the beauty and critical messages in Mutu’s artwork. Together, the YSA participants use their imaginations to create alternative and new realities that we can choose to live in together.
Join us for a day of activities, including a scavenger hunt, a sensory museum, and a conversation with the artist. This event is created and led by this year’s YSA participants with Teaching Artists troizel and Eden Chinn.
Free admission for teens aged 13 to 19 and participants must register online.
The program will be presented onsite at the New Museum. Please review the New Museum’s COVID guidelines in advance of your visit.

The New Museum proudly hosts Youth Spectrum Arts (YSA), a stipend-supported, after school program for young people ages fifteen to nineteen. Building on the New Museum’s history of critically engaging teens, YSA provides young people interaction with contemporary art and culture, with a focus on gender, sexuality, and queer and trans community. Through workshops, artmaking, and discussion, participating youth connect with themselves, peers, and guest artists.
