For I’ve enabled every rule, linen dinner napkins have been cast in Carrara marble and placed upon modernist wooden plinths. One napkin is neatly folded, another is crumpled, and yet another elegantly falls from its pedestal. Each sculpture represents one place setting at the artist’s dining room table and has its own unique personality and character. Both elegant and humorous, the sculptures evoke the folds of classical drapery and reveal the artist’s interest in re-establishing a story’s hidden character—or an object’s possible function.
Gander has gained international renown for his works across sculpture, film, writing, graphic design, installation, and performance, among other mediums. Through associative thought processes that connect the everyday and the esoteric, the overlooked and the commonplace, Gander’s work involves a questioning of language and knowledge and reinvents aesthetic modes and processes of creation. His works draw on and allude to a wide range of referents, including puzzles, networked connections, the fragments of an embedded story, and clues to be deciphered, encouraging viewers to make their own connections and invent their own narratives in order to solve the charade as it’s staged by the artist.
