Join us for a family workshop offered in conjunction with the exhibition “The Keeper,” on view at the New Museum through September 25, 2016. With over 4,000 works on view, “The Keeper” tells the stories of various collectors and artists through the objects they cherished and chose to preserve.

The artist Yuji Agematsu arranges grime, trash, dirt, and packaging into beautiful order in his sculptures and installations. During his daily walks through the streets of New York City, Agematsu focuses his attention downward to look for debris, often stooping to snatch up cigarette butts, bits of chewed gum, pieces of plant matter, matchbooks, discarded packaging scraps, and pieces of ripped fabric. In 01-01-2014 – 12-31-2014 (01-01-14 – 02-29-14) (2014), you see some of the 365 sculptures that make up the larger installation—each piece representing one day of the calendar year, preserved in clear plastic wrappers from cigarette packs.

Each pocket-size sculpture transforms its materials into a strange microscopic world. After viewing the installation, families will have an opportunity to create their own miniature planets using a wide variety of materials.

New Museum First Saturdays for Families are free of charge. This program is designed and recommended for families with children aged between four and twelve years, and includes free New Museum admission for up to two adults per family. Children under eighteen are always admitted free. No preregistration is required. Space is limited, and tickets are given out on a first-come, first-served basis.
