Taking the notion and functionality of a photography portfolio one step further, Keegan has made a meticulously designed and fabricated steel box, which acts as both a container and a means of display. The metal box contains three photographs (one of which has been delicately hand cut by the artist, each one unique in this way), magnets, a pair of gloves, as well as two screws for hanging the sculpture. The collector is invited to complete the work by selecting and securing one of the three photographs to the sculpture’s surface using the supplied magnets.
Industrially powder-coated the fleshy peach of a child’s Crayola crayon, the surface of 3-in-1 has been delicately silkscreened with a woven pattern. The photographs are taken from the artist’s life in New York City, from the intimacy of his bedroom to a walk through the streets. Two pairs of bare legs in- terlace with one another and the bed sheets; an abstracted image of a woven steel fence resembles an Agnes Martin painting or the human body’s cells in its repetitive minimal form; rubber tires, with fingerprint-like treads, intertwine in a repetitive gesture in the back of an open truck. Associations and relationships—both formal and conceptual—abound between the photographs and the outer skin of the steel sculpture, while the human body or human use is evoked throughout.
Matt Keegan is an artist based in New York. He has had recent solo exhibitions at Galeria Pedro Cera, Lisbon,D’Amelio Terras Gallery, New York, and Altman Siegel Gallery, San Francisco. He was recently the subject of a two-person exhibition with Eileen Quinlan at the Kitchen, New York. Keegan’s work was featured in “Exposure,” a three-person exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago, and group shows at the Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, FOAM, Amsterdam, and the Aspen Art Museum. Forthcoming exhibitions will take place at Rogaland Kunstsenter, Norway, with James Richards and Contemporary Art Museum, Houston, with Kay Rosen. His work is included in numerous private and public collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He attended Carnegie Mellon University, graduating with a BFA in 1998, and earned his MFA from Columbia University in 2004.
